Wintu Recognition Project

CILS has been assisting Northern California's Wintu Tribe with their quest for federal recognition.

Notably, CILS facilitated a meeting between Tribal members and California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, which took place in a Wintu sweat house, in an ongoing effort to gain state support for the federal recognition bill which CILS has drafted.

U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona showed his Senate colleagues a documentary, "In the Light of Reverence," which depicts the Wintu's struggle for religious freedom.

Work continues on the project, and the bill is gaining support.
