TRIBAL ALERT!
Openings to Serve on CILS’ Board of Trustees – Southern Region
December 3, 2003

Our Board of Trustees

California Indian Legal Services (CILS) is a non-profit, community-based organization governed by California Indians. We have served California Indian communities for more than thirty-five years, and we have a rich history of working with California tribes to protect and advance Indian rights and promote tribal self-determination. Our Board of Trustees includes California Indian representatives from the Northern, Central, and Southern regions of the state.

We currently have openings on our Board for tribal representatives who live in Southern California. The Southern region consists of the following counties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

The Board of Trustees conducts quarterly meetings, and is actively involved in shaping the role that CILS plays in California Indian Country. Board members not only govern CILS, but also act as representatives of the organization in the community and help to ensure the continued success of CILS as a resource for California Indians.

Applicants to Serve on the Board

Board members must be nominated by a California tribe or Indian organization. Applications are accepted from California Indians who are nominated by federally-recognized, unrecognized, or terminated tribes, or from Indian community organizations.

We strongly encourage applications from California Indians with a commitment to California Indian communities – who are actively involved in the cultural, political, or other affairs of their tribe and/or the Indian community more broadly. A strong interest in the legal and political issues facing California tribes and Native American individuals is valuable. We especially seek applications from elders, and from low-income Indians.

How to Apply

To apply, you must get a resolution from your tribe or organization, nominating you for the CILS Board. The resolution should be printed on the official letterhead of the nominating tribe or organization. A complete application includes the resolution, a copy of your resume, and a cover letter expressing your interest in serving on CILS’ Board. Please mail your materials to:
