TRIBAL ALERT!
California Indian Community Support Needed to Maintain Strong Pro-Sovereignty Presence in Washington, D.C.
February 23, 2004

Oakland, CA - California Indian Legal Services (CILS) has raised one-third of the money needed to keep its Washington, D.C. office open for 2 more years. CILS is receiving calls from tribal leaders and individuals asking how the California Indian community can help keep the D.C. office open and stay at the forefront in protecting and advancing Indian rights and tribal sovereignty. Specifically tribes want to know how much to donate. We still need to raise $175,000. We need your financial help to do this! If your tribe can make a large donation, that will make it that much easier for us. Contributions to CILS are not only tax deductible, but they meet various distribution requirements under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. If you or your tribe can only afford a modest contribution, that also will surely help us to continue to protect your rights.

Contributing to CILS is a win-win strategy. It provides CILS with the funding it needs to represent those in our community that need free legal representation while allowing us to continue to advance the rights of all tribes and California Indians. An investment through a donation to CILS will bring critically-needed federal resources, funding and recognition to California in amounts far in excess of your contribution. The work of CILS over the past 37 years has resulted in well over 1 billion dollars in increased federal and state spending for California Indians and tribes.

How much have other tribes contributed?

CILS has received one pledge of $100,000 and another of $25,000 for our current fundraising drive. Past drives have resulted in contributions that have ranged from $5,000 to $100,000. All tribes that contribute, regardless of the size of the donation, will be appropriately recognized in our D.C. office.

What will happen if CILS does not raise enough money?

Failure is not an option in these perilous times. Together, we will raise the money! The D.C. office makes your precious dollars go much further and gives you full time access to Washington decision-makers.

An important resource for your Tribe!

All California Indian Tribes are invited to use the CILS Washington office and its resources, even if you can’t afford to donate now. The D.C. office is an ideal setting for your tribe to effectively deliver your message while hosting an intertribal task force meeting, a Congressional briefing session or a meeting with Administration agencies or departments.

CILS has gained the respect of Congress and Washington agencies over 37 years. A full-time CILS presence in D.C. is a huge asset for all California tribes, but without financial support from the California Indian community, CILS will have to close its D.C. office. Please support our work and send your tax-deductible contributions to:
