Proposition 1A: A Victory for California Tribes

Proposition 1A passed 64.6 to 35.4 percent in the March 7, 2000 election, demonstrating that Californians overwhelmingly support tribal sovereignty.

With passage of this constitutional amendment, years of litigation and uncertainty are now behind us, and California tribal communities can plan for a better future for them and their descendants. However, much work still needs to be done by both gaming and non-gaming tribes to assure a smooth transition and working relationship with the state and federal governments.
