Indian Child Welfare Act: California Legal Update

The Judicial Council of California, Center for Families, Children & the Courts
invites you to register for this regional training bringing together judicial officers, attorneys, and other justice partners. The course will focus on the recent changes in federal regulations and state law implementing the Indian Child Welfare Act. This course will focus on what these changes mean for California practice in dependency courts, including:
• clarification of requirements about timing and content of ICWA inquiry;
• engaging with tribes to verify a child’s status;
• clarification of emergency detention and removal when there is a reason to
know the child is an Indian child;
• active efforts – definition; timing and documentation; and
• placement preferences
