CILS’
35th Anniversary marked a milestone in California Indian legal history.
For over 35 years, CILS has been helping California tribes
address emerging threats to tribal sovereignty, protect Indian
children and families, and provide vital legal representation for
those who cannot afford it themselves. We
would like to take this opportunity to thank our celebration sponsors
and tribal donors, who recognized this milestone with generous
donations and made this celebration possible.
With our donors’
contributions, CILS presented a conference entitled,
“The Legal and Political Presence of California Indians,” in which
participants received the latest information on such critical issues
as trust reform and BIA reorganization, fee-to-trust, tribal court
development, pending legislation that will change how Indian trust
land can be bequeathed and inherited, and Department of Interior
initiatives that could limit the essential right to define who is an
Indian.
Participants learned positive steps to take to protect
the rights of tribes, their members, and key Indian resources. With our donors’ support, CILS also hosted its 5th Annual Golf Classic and Reception. The Golf Classic included prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners; closest-to-the-pin for both men and women; and longest drive for both men and women. Golfers, conference attendees, and the public joined us following the Golf Classic for our great food and entertainment at our Anniversary Reception. |
