FREE TAX PREPARATION FOR LOW-INCOME TAXPAYERS! This tax season, CALIFORNIA INDIAN LEGAL SERVICES is again partnering with the LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY to provide free tax return assistance to low- income taxpayers using I-CAN! E-FILE. ICAN! E-FILE is an online program designed to allow eligible taxpayers to e-file or print out and mail tax returns. The service is available to most HOUSEHOLDS WITH INCOMES UNDER $50,000. Beginning Thursday, January 17, 2008, tax return assistance will be available over the phone through CILS at 800-743-8941 or you can use the simple online program by clicking HERE.

Transfer of ICWA Case to Tribal Court Upheld By Court of Appeal On August 28, 2007, the Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, issued a decision in In re M.M., a dependency case. The appeal challenged a state court order transferring the dependency case to the Karuk Tribal Court pursuant to the Indian Child Welfare Act. The central issue on appeal was whether the transfer of a juvenile dependency case from state court to tribal court pursuant to 25 USC §1911(b) deprived the California courts of jurisdiction thereby precluding an appeal of the transfer order? The Appeals Court ruled it does.
